Two people rescued from ravine near Gladstone

ATV accident leaves 2 with head injuries in steep ravine

Officials with San Juan County confirmed late Wednesday that rescue operations for a woman and a man who suffered head injuries Wednesday in the Gladstone area have concluded.

However, no further details were provided by an employee with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. San Juan County sheriff’s officials said they would update the agency’s Facebook page, http://bit.ly/29ZatKm, with details. But as of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, no information was posted.

The two people were 60 to 70 feet down a ravine.

San Juan Regional Medical Center confirmed AirCare 1, out of Farmington, was one of two helicopters sent to provide support and to transport patients, said Roberta Rogers, marketing manager with the Farmington hospital. However, she could provide no details about where the patients were picked up, their condition nor where they were taken.

The incident involved an all-terrain vehicle, said Michael Maxfield, assistant fire chief of Silverton San Juan Fire and Rescue Authority.

The incident was not related to Environmental Protection Agency work that resumed last week at the temporary water-treatment plant near the Gold King Mine, Maxfield said.

“We do have staff up at the site doing various activities. My understanding is this was not related to any construction work at the site,” said Rich Mylott, public affairs officer for the EPA.

Mylott said he is unsure if any EPA personnel were involved in the search and rescue efforts.
