Two fires were burning in eastern La Plata County midday Saturday.

According to posts on the Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch and Upper Pine River Fire Protection District Facebook pages, firefighters contained a small fire east of Bayfield, about 500 feet above U.S. Highway 160 at mile marker 118. The posts said smoke will continue to be visible to eastbound travelers on Highway 160.

Firefighters were also using a helicopter to fight a small tree fire in North Canyon east of Vallecito Reservoir, in U.S. Forest Service territory, with more firefighters on the ground, according to the posts. The posts said fire poses no risk to homes.

Both fires were lightning-caused, the posts said.
