Two without challengers on La Plata County ballot

DA, county surveyor races already decided

La Plata County ballots are rife with choices this year, but a few of them are already made.

Two offices were either uncontested or determined in the Democratic primary in June, including the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s seat.

Assistant District Attorney Christian Champagne and Southern Ute prosecutor Ben Lammons, both Democrats, vied for the spot. Champagne was victorious in the primary with 66 percent of the vote against Lammons’ 34 percent.

Champagne will replace Todd Risberg, who has served the maximum eight-year tenure. Champagne has been the No. 2 prosecutor overseeing Archuleta, La Plata and San Juan counties since 2009.

Steve McCormack is the sole nominee for county surveyor, a position he accepted on an interim basis in August 2015 after former county surveyor Larry Connolly died.

At that time, McCormack said he was uncertain if he would run for the two-year office, which he has previously held twice. He was elected in 1986 and 1990, and again was appointed to finish an unexpired term in 1996.

Both Champagne and McCormack will appear on the ballot as the only candidates for their respective offices.
