Electrical line work prompts full-day closure
Red Mountain Pass, on U.S. Highway 550 between Silverton and Ouray, will be closed Monday. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes.

U.S. Highway 550 between Silverton and Ouray will be closed for the entire day Monday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said electrical line work by San Miguel Power Association prompted the closure, which will last from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be no mid-day opening, CDOT said.

Drivers headed north from Silverton will be stopped at Ironton at mile marker 87. Drivers headed south from Ouray will be stopped at the “Switzerland of America” pull out at mile marker 92.

People traveling from Ouray to Durango, or vice versa, are encouraged to use Colorado Highway 145.

That route takes drivers through Ridgway, past Telluride, over Lizard Head Pass and through Dolores to get to Durango.

San Miguel Power is expected to reattach electrical lines that had been removed to accommodate the Ruby Walls rock mitigation emergency work.

A large crane and oversized equipment will use north and south lanes, requiring full closure of the highway for the entire day.

The work is weather-dependent, though no storms are expected Monday.
