The Durango area was pounded by rain Tuesday morning. Now, weekend weather watchers wonder: What’s next?

Durango received 0.63 inches of precipitation in the 24-hour period that ended at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Southwest Colorado looks to be in for “somewhat of a break” for a couple of days this week, but the weekend is up in the air, Dennis Phillips, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Grand Junction office, said Tuesday.

With the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic’s road ride from Durango to Silverton coming Saturday morning, riders and organizers are on pins and needles. Another low-pressure system is moving out of the Pacific Ocean and across the Great Basin and bringing some wetter weather this way, Phillips said.

“There’s still some uncertainty as to exactly when and where” the rain will hit, Phillips said. “At this current time, one model wants to be fairly wet on Saturday, and the other one is fairly dry.”

Sunday and Memorial Day appear to have better odds of being wet, he said. Some showers will likely develop Saturday in places, and temperatures in the 40s are expected on the higher passes, he said.

“As it gets closer, we can nail it down a little better as to when the big stuff’s going to hit,” Phillips said.
