Unexpected acts of kindness alive, well

I am writing to thank the Herald’s staff reporter and photographer for following up with a front page story on April 14 on the many letters my wife, Gerri, wrote to local, state and even federal agencies with unsuccessful attempts to retrieve $7,000 from an out-of-town roofing company.

As a result of the news coverage, we received a number of phone calls from people describing similar experiences. A short time later, I received a phone call from Nate Ekola, who is associated with Four Corners Roofing. He expressed a sincere concern for our troubles, offered to come to our home to evaluate and talk about our roof problems. Several days later, I received a phone call from him whereby he offered to fix our roof for his cost of materials, donating his own labor on a weekend. After some awkwardness on our part, we agreed to his proposal.

On Saturday, June 17, and the sun’s heat at 95 degrees, if not hotter, Nate showed up with three assistants – Kurt, Roland and Tyrone. They proceeded to do an excellent job with no complaints regarding the heat. The job, with complete cleanup, was completed within two days,

My wife and I feel a great deal of gratitude and indebtedness to these fine and generous people, especially Nate for his offer and for the work he and his crew did for us. The world is so populated with the “me, myself and I” ethic that it is somewhat overwhelming when someone steps out to extend a helping hand that makes things right.

Four Corners Roofing, Nate, Kurt, Roland and Tyrone have our profound thanks.
