Two crews from Upper Pine Fire Protection District have been deployed to the July Complex fire in Northern California.
Six wildland firefighters and two engines left on Saturday, Aug. 2, said Chief Bruce Evans. Fire crews can be deployed to a fire for a maximum of 21 days.
The disrict earns revenue from the deployment - $1,000 a day paid by the U.S. government,, Evans said, and the firefighters receive federal wages that are higher than their regular pay to cover the hazardous duties.
The July complex is made up of three fires that have burned 8,100 acres in the Klamath National Forest near Yreka, Calif. At least three other fires are burning in the area, as well.
