Fire Capt. Josh Schmidt spoke at the event, with Robert Coronado offering a prayer. Also in attendance were Durango Fire Protection District, wildland firefighters and La Plata County Emergency Management Coordinator Danielle Coronado.
Ten to 15 members of the community joined local firefighters to honor the 343 firefighters who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism attacks.
They climbed the stairs 5½ times to equal the 1,286 feet, or 110 stories, of the World Trade Center.
