Ute Mountain-Mesa Verde Birding Festival to feature ‘beginning birding’

A bright orange Bullock’s oriole was one of the more colorful birds spotted during a previous Mesa Verde Birding Festival.

The 13th annual Ute Mountain-Mesa Verde Birding Festival will offer a “beginning birding” tour for people who want to learn the basics of birdwatching or improve their birding skills.

To begin the tour, a presentation about various habitats, characteristics of bird families and species, selection and use of binoculars, and choice of field guides will be held at 7 a.m. May 12 at Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.

Participants will be taken to a local wildlife preserve to practice identification skills after the presentation. Participants can bring a picnic lunch.

Tour cost is $10 and registration is required.
