Forest supervisor to address horsemen

The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in Durango.

The new supervisor of the San Juan National Forest, Kara Chadwick, will speak and answer questions concerning the forest. Chadwick will discuss budgeting, forest health, trails, campgrounds, the USFS prioritization process, etc. The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen works to perpetuate commonsense enjoyment of public lands by horsemen and pack stock users. House names Brown to committees

J. Paul Brown, representative- elect for Colorado House District 59, has been named to two committees for the upcoming term: Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources; and Health, Insurance and Environment.

"I am very happy with my committee assignments for the coming term," Brown said in a written statement. "I'll be able to work for all of HD 59 in these committees."

He said he is "eager to get to work on the important issues that will be considered in committee."

Preschool offering parenting class 

Bayfield Early Education Program is accepting registrations for its third parenting class, beginning Thursday, Jan. 15. The class is every Thursday for 14 weeks from 6 to 8 p.m. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. Childcare is provided. Everything is free.

The class will help parents learn how to help their children be successful in school and learn research-based strategies for improving child behavior.

Senior job training available

Jobs For Progress, a federally-funded Job training program, announces the availability of several openings for paid job training positions.

Jobs for Progress is for seniors 55 or older who are economically challenged and unable to find work due to a lack of job skills. The program pays participants while they learn new skills. Seniors are placed in part-time work experience assignments that will enhance their opportunities for employment. The U.S. Department of Labor has funded this program for 50 years and is committed to recruit, train, and place eligible seniors in subsidized training. Applications for enrollment are being accepted in La Plata, Montezuma, and Archuleta counties. Non-profit organizations such as city, county, and government businesses are needed to participate in the program and receive the benefit of free help, paid for by the federal program. Bayfield Chamber to meet Thursday

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will kick off 2015 with a member mixer at the Billy Goat Saloon. The meeting is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8. Food will be provided by Roadhouse Pizza 'n Wings. All member businesses, as well as businesspeople who would like to learn more about the local group, are invited to attend. Business memberships cost $50 for businesses with up to 10 employees, or $100 for businesses larger than that. Membership forms are available at www.bayfieldchamber.org.
