County commission to review marijuana regulations at Tuesday meeting
The La Plata County Commissioners will discuss proposed licensing and land use regulations for medical and retail marijuana businesses at a work session at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 in the courthouse Anasazi Room, 1060 E. 2nd Ave. in Durango.
Anyone interested is welcome to attend, but no public comments will be taken at this meeting. Comments by e-mail are invited on or before April 22 to lyon@lpcattorney.org.
Draft medical marijuana licensing regulations, draft retail (recreational) marijuana regulations, and draft marijuana land use regulations are posted on the county web site at www.co.laplata.co.us with a link from the homepage.

Ignacio Elementary School holding events for incoming kindergarteners
Any parents of student entering kindergarten at Ignacio Elementary School for 2014-2015 are invited to attend the following events:
Incoming kinder transition day included visits to each classroom, meeting school personnel, and a tour of the school. Parents may pick up registration packets at this time as well.
This event is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23. Dial R Screening for incoming kindergarten students who are not enrolled in Head Start is from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27. Please call Kami to set up an appointment for the May 27 screening at 563-0675.
Ignacio library holding Wednesday events
Rod Cook from the La Plata County Weed Office will be at the Ignacio Community Library to discuss weed infestation, county compliance rules, and weed management. The event is free and is at 5:30 p.m. on April 23. That evening is also World Book Night. Anyone is welcome stop by library to receive a copy of a free book!
CDOT town hall phone meeting is April 22
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will host a telephone town hall meeting on Tuesday, Apr. 22, for residents in La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores, and San Juan counties.
Starting at 7 p.m., residents in those counties will be called at random through an automated system and invited to participate in the telephone forum. Anyone else who wants to participate can call toll-free to 1-877-229-8493, PIN 112034. Participants will be able to express their thoughts and ask questions regarding transportation. They also will be able to use their keypads to answer live polls.
CDOT is hosting telephone town halls in all 64 counties through early June. Residents are urged to join the conversation and express their thoughts on how CDOT should focus its limited funding, on the link between transportation and the economy, and weigh in on regional priorities.
Colorado Transportation Commissioner Sidny Zink from Durango said, "I am particularly happy to have this opportunity to hear from area residents about their priorities and what's at the top of their list of transportation system needs. I share concerns with regard to traffic flow, safety, and especially freight traffic."
Bayfield library celebrating World Book Night with free cupcakes
World Book Night falls on Shakespeare's 450th birthday this year, so the Pine River Library is celebrating with an open cupcake bar.
On Wednesday, April 23, the library will have 45 cupcakes (one for each decade since Shakespeare's birth) for adults and kids to decorate and take home. The World Book Night Cupcake Bar will open at 5 p.m. and last call happens when all the cupcakes are gone. Adults will also receive a free copy of the book "The Zookeeper's Wife."
World Book Night happens every year on Shakespeare's birthday "to spread the love of reading." Across the United States, 2,300 bookstores and libraries serve as organizers for World Book Night. Volunteers across the U.S. will distribute half a million free books. World Book Night started in the U.K. in 2011 and U.S. organizers joined the celebration in 2012. National Weather Service offering weather safety and storm spotter training
Staff from the National Weather Service office in Grand Junction will be in the area next week for basic and advanced storm spotter training. All classes are from 6 to 8 p.m., with an optional class from 8 to 9 a.m., and will be held Tuesday, April 22 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, Wednesday at the Archuleta County EOC building in Pagosa Springs, and Thursday at the Cortez #1 Fire Station. PTSA holding spring family dance
The Bayfield Parent Teacher Student Association will hold a spring family dance from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 25 in the BES gym. Music will be provided by Wild Country and the Jelly Bellies. The event is free and include snacks and prizes.
Tractor Supply Company holding 4-H fundraiser through May 4
Tractor Supply Company customers have the opportunity to purchase paper clovers at all locations between April 23 - May 4 for $1 or more during checkout. All funds raised will be used to support 4-H youth development program activities in the communities where Tractor Supply stores are located. Tractor Supply has raised more than $3.2 million for 4-H programs across the country through the Paper Clover Campaigns over the last four years.
9Health Fair set for Saturday, May 3 at BES
The Bayfield 9 Health Fair is from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3 at Bayfield Elementary School. Avariety of health tests and screenings will be available. The blood chemistry screening costs $35. Participants should not eat 12 hours before having their blood drawn, although diabetics should not fast. People should drink plenty of water during the fast and continue their medications. More information and pre-registration is available at www.9healthfair.org.
The Bayfield event is the last health fair of the season in Southwest Colorado.
