Legislative Lowdown is Saturday in Durango

The League of Women Voters annual Legislative Lowdown is tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. in the Durango Public Library community room. State Rep. J. Paul Brown and State Sen. Ellen Roberts will give updates on bills being considered and respond to questions that have been submitted in advance to the La Plata County LWV.

Pine River Shares holding potluck Saturday

The monthly Pine River Shares potluck is Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the old gym on South Street in Bayfield. Set-up starts at 4 p.m. Everyone from Vallecito to Arboles is invited.

Main dish items will be soup, stew, and salad. Participants are asked to bring bread, crackers, a side dish or dessert to share, your own place settings, and food for the gleaning table if possible.

Fishing contest is Saturday at Vallecito

The Vallecito Conservation and Sporting Association 2015 winter fishing contest is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m., and weigh-in will be from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the Community Event Center.

The entry fee is $25. There will be $1,000 and $500 prizes for first and second place (determined by weight) for pike, trout, and heaviest stringer. Third placers will get a Beaver Dam tip-up rod.

Natural foods store being explored for Bayfield

An information meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Pine River Library for locals interested in having a natural foods store in Bayfield. The meeting will be in one of the community rooms.

Sweetgrass Natural Foods will do a slide presentation. There will be refreshments and an opportunity for discussion and questions. Learn more on their Facebook page, Sweetgrass Natural Foods. You don't have to have a Facebook account to view business pages.

Get your chili and pies on Feb. 28

The Pine River Heritage Society annual cabin fever reliever fundraiser chili supper and pie auction will be Saturday, Feb. 28, with a new location - the Church of Christ at 2011 Bayfield Parkway (toward the east end).

Doors will open at 6 p.m. Ted Hockenbury will provide live music. Get your choice of chili or soup and assorted fixin's. Then get ready to bid on all manner of homemade pies and other desserts. Ron Dunavant will be the auctioneer. Proceeds will be used for operation of the Heritage Society Museum on Mill Street.

BEEP accepting donations for Cowboy Luau

Bayfield Early Education Program will hold its ninth annual Cowboy Luau at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 14. The event includes a silent auction, door prizes, a live auction, and music by Midnight Backhand. Cover charge is $5, and advanced tickets are available. BEEP staff and volunteers are asking businesses and individuals for donations for the auctions. To make a tax-deductible donation, call 884-7137. Proceeds benefit scholarships and other programs at the non-profit preschool.

Free financial checkup offered

How healthy are your finances? When was the last time you took a look at your finances?

A free "Annual Financial Wellness Checkup" class is being held at the Pine River Library, starting Tuesday, Feb. 24. The three-part series will guide participants through the process of identifying what is important to their financial health and steps to take to be more financially secure.

The classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings between Feb. 24 and March 10.

Participants will receive a binder of information with the three-part class, taught by Wendy Rice from the Colorado State University Extension Office.

Center hosting caregiver support group
