Royalty returning to San Ignacio Fiesta

San Ignacio Fiesta will be held on July 26 - 27, and the committee is pleased to announce the return of royalty candidates.  This year's candidates are Tori Archuleta, Selena Cook and Jazmin Carmonaros. The candidates' goal is to sell the most raffle tickets. Humane Society holding adopt-a-thon

The La Plata County Humane Society (LPCHS) will hold its 12th annual Adopt-a-thon June 6 and 7.

"Last year we were able to adopt out 58 cats and dogs," said Jonell Jones, marketing coordinator at LPCHS. "That's a new record for us, and hopefully we can reach our goal of 60 adoptions this year!"

The Adopt-a-thon takes place at LPCHS just north of WalMart. Their goal is to adopt out as many animals as they can in two days. The society will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both days, and the thrift store will have extended hours as well. Adult animals will have reduced adoption fees; adult cats will be $10, and adult dogs will be $50. Burgers, brats, hot dogs, drinks and snow cones will be available for sale, donated by Sunnyside Farms Market, Coca-Cola of Durango and Three Springs.

Volunteers welcome at Habitat for Humanity build this weekend

Love Out Loud will work with Habitat for Humanity on June 7 and 8 at 620 Fox Farm Circle in Bayfield.  Work starts at 8:30, and lunch will be provided both days.  Habitat volunteers are building walls for a single family one-story residence.  Volunteers should bring work gloves, water bottles, and wear sturdy shoes and wear long pants.  Love Out Loud is sponsored by the First United Methodist Church and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Durango.  Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary. VFW hosting Veterans Appreciation Day

VFW Post 4031 and Master's Men of Durango will host a Veterans Appreciation Day on Saturday, June 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by lunch at 1 p.m. and an awards ceremony. All veterans and their families are invited to attend. The event is at the VFW Hall at 1550 Main Ave. in Durango.

Dancing Spirit holding garden party today

Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center in Ignacio will host a garden party today from 4 to 8 p.m. Enjoy grilled burgers and brats, party fixin's and drinks. Live music will be provided by local bands One Lane Highway and Arise. Whimsical found object sculptures by gallery member Tanya Lawyer will be featured - insects, flowers, cats, a bulldog, snail, a pretty girl turkey, and garden girls with their men.

Local groups holding fundraisers for Yard Sale Day

The Friends of the Pine River Library are holding their annual "Best of the Best" book sale on Saturday, June 7, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Hundreds of gently-used books are up for grabs at low prices. The sale will be held in the library's Community Room. For more information about the sale, contact the library at (970) 884-2222, ext. 510.

The Ignacio Wildcat basketball team will sell lots of stuff Saturday, mostly priced under $5! The Wildcat sale is at the Bayfield Center Plaza in front of Momentum 24-7 Fitness. Donations also will be accepted for the league team, which competes in tournaments throughout the region.

Church hosting chicken barbecue next weekend

Allison Community Church will host its 42nd annual Chicken Barbecue from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 14. Tickets are $10 for adults and $4 for children six to 12 years, kids under six are free.  Tickets will be available at the door.  The menu consists of barbecue chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, rolls, relish tray, cinnamon rolls, iced tea, lemonade, or coffee.  For additional information, contact Yvonne Chapman at 799-3064.

Hope Academy holding registration

Information and registration meetings for Hope Community Christian Academy will be held at 6 p.m. June 10 and June 26 at Bayfield Church of Christ at 2011 Bayfield Parkway. Free legal clinic next Friday

A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. June 13 at the Ignacio Community Library at 470 Goddard Ave. By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, and civil protection orders.   Please call the library at 563-9287 to be added to the sign-up list; everyone will be assisted by the volunteer attorneys on a one-on-one basis. Dates for future clinics are  July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. 

Football sign-ups this Saturday in Bayfield

Young American Football League sign-ups for incoming 2nd-6th graders in Bayfield will be from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the Bayfield High School football field. Upcoming dates for YAFL players are: BHS football camp July 22-24; deadline for registration is July 25, first day of practice is July 30. Physicals are due before players can practice. Time bank members to meet

Hour Exchange La Plata (HELP) will have a free potluck for members and those interested in learning about La Plata County's new time bank. HELP will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Pine River Library in Bayfield.  Those interested in time banks should bring a laptop to learn about the time and talents software.  

Board member needed for Ignacio library district

The La Plata County Commissioners continue to seek an interested individual to serve on the Ignacio Community Library District Board. The board oversees the operation and administration of the Ignacio Community Library. Terms are five years and applicants must reside within the boundaries of the district.

This position is advisory and is not paid. Applications due June 20 for United Way Day of Caring

United Way of Southwest Colorado has set Sept. 11 as its first "Day of Caring." United Way anticipates over 50 volunteers from the community will work on approximately 20 service projects. To make this happen, United Way is asking registered nonprofit agencies in the Colorado counties of Archuleta, La Plata, Montezuma, Dolores and San Juan to submit project proposals that require resources, staffing or special skills beyond what they can accomplish on their own.

Applications are due by June 20. Past projects have included landscaping, painting, inventory and filing, or updating website and Facebook pages.

Head Start enrolling for 2014-2015

Southern Ute Montessori Head Start and Early Head Start are currently enrolling for the 2014-2015 school year. Head Start is for children three to five years old, and Early Head Start is for six weeks to three years. Services are offered free of charge for all qualifying families. Families must live in the Southern Ute reservation or Ignacio School District, or in Bayfield south of Highway 160 between CR 509 and CR 526/523.
