Historic tours offered Saturday in Bayfield
The public is invited to participate in a La Plata County Historic Driving Tour Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All the tour sites are in or near Bayfield. Participants may stop at any or all of them at the designated times.
The event is sponsored by the La Plata County Historic Preservation Review Commission to celebrate May as historic preservation month. All the tour stops are with permission of the owners.
Tour sites include:
. 10 a.m. at the Pine River Heritage Society Museum, 11 W. Mill St.
. 11 a.m. at the Columbine Ranger Station, 367 Pearl St.
. 11:30 a.m. at the historic rural school houses at 660 S. East St., just south of the old community gym.
. noon at the former Robbins Hospital, 8800 County Road 521 (Buck Highway).
. 1 p.m. at the Bayfield Cemetery, 405 CR 501.
. 1:30 p.m. at the Gem Village Rock Club house, the log building on the south side of Highway 160.
Participants also are invited to take the downtown Bayfield walking tour. Printed guides are available at the Heritage Society Museum and at town hall, 1199 Bayfield Parkway.
From 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Fox Fire Farms southeast of Ignacio will host an open house where guests can visit the old Spring Creek School, which is also listed on the county register of historic sites. Fox Fire Farms is at 5513 County Road 321.

CDOT work on Camino del Rio
CDOT is preparing to start work on a pedestrian refuge median on Camino del Rio between 7th and 8th Streets (near Denny's). The work will affect northbound traffic.
With the raised median refuge, pedestrians will only have to negotiate two lanes of traffic at a time instead of five. There will be pedestrian signal buttons on each side of the street and on the median. Improvements for bicycle traffic also are planned; new bike lanes, green pavement markings, and bicycle detection signals are being installed.
After Memorial Day, crews will move south to the 550/ 160 (Doubletree) intersection. No lane closures in the business section between College Drive and 9th St. of Camino del Rio are anticipated after Memorial Day, although some work outside the travel lanes is still expected.
At the 550/ 160 intersection, two lanes in each direction will remain open during peak travel times before 8:30 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m. seven days a week. Single lane closures on Camino del Rio and affected side streets may be in effect at any time of day or night.
CDOT was working this week on College Drive east and westbound, with one lane access between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. for lane striping and other traffic markings.
All the work is supposed to be done by mid August.

Fox Fire Farms hosting 'Taste of Spring' event this weekend
Fox Fire Farms will have its annual 'Taste of Spring" event May 17 and 18. The family event provides baby farm animals for children to see, live music, local artisans, tours of our historic one-room school house, food, and wines from the farm. The event runs from 1 to 6 p.m. each day and admission is free. The farm is located at 5513 CR 321 near Ignacio. Kite day next Sunday at Navajo
Children age 6 and older are invited to a kite-making and kite-flying event at Navajo State Park on Sunday, May 25.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife will supply materials and instruction so kids can build their own diamond kites. Starting at 9 a.m. at the Rosa Campground shower building, kids will construct and paint their kites. After the paint has dried, participants will gather at 6 p.m. near the Tiffany Campground to fly their new creations. Children should wear sturdy shoes and be dressed appropriately for the weather.
The class is limited to 10 kids. To sign up for the class, call the park at 883-2208. The program is free, but every vehicle entering the park must have a pass. Breakfast, lunch available for Ignacio youth this summer
Ignacio School District is again sponsoring its free breakfast and lunch meal program this summer for children and youth from 1 to 18 years old. Parents can join their children for meals at a cost of $2.50 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch. (No checks or large bills, please.)
Meals are served from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the elementary school on CR 320. Meals will start on June 16 and run through Aug. 15, closed July 4 and 11. The Summer Food Service Program helps kids get the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow during the summer when school is out.
