Basketball camp starts tomorrow at BHS

The Bayfield High School girls are hosting a coed skills camp for basketball players in first through eighth grades. The camp runs tomorrow and Saturday, July 19. Walk-in registration is available at 8:30 on Saturday at the BHS gym. The cost is $50 for one day, $90 for both days, and sibling discounts are available. Campers should bring a sack lunch, or they can pre-pay on Saturday for pizza. Camp ends at 4 p.m. each day.

SUCAP holding duck race for Fiesta

Southern Ute Community Action Programs are having their annual duck race during San Ignacio Fiesta. Tickets are $5 each and will support the Head Start Building Fund.

The race will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26 in the river behind Shoshone Park. Cash prizes are $400, $300, $200 and $100. Tickets are available at Fiesta and also at SUCAP headquarters at 285 Lakin St. Winners do not need to be present to win. For more information, call 563-4517, ext. 103

Youth football sign-ups July 12 and 19

The final sign-up sessions for Bayfield's Young American Football League are from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow and Saturday, July 19.

Pads will be handed out July 28, and practice starts July 30. All players must have a signed physical before they can start practice.

Local chiropractors Andy Lake and Kennie Monger will offer physicals from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Lake Chiropractic at 40031 U.S. Highway 160 in Gem Village. The cost is $25.

The Bayfield High School football camp for players in second through eighth grade is July 22-24. This is not mandatory for YAFL play, but is good preparation for the upcoming season. Camp forms will be available at the YAFL sign-ups.

Demolition Derby tickets on sale

The La Plata County Fair has announced that tickets for the 2014 Demolition Derby are on sale at Pine River Valley Bank and Redneck Enterprises in Bayfield, Durango Music, Handlebar Motorsports, the La Plata County Fairgrounds and Durango Muffler, and Utopia Salon & Spa in Farmington. The derby is slated for Saturday, Aug. 9 with gates opening at 10 a.m. and demolition heats at noon. The 2014 La Plata County Fair will be held Aug. 6-10 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. 

Outdoor movies continue at library

The Pine River Library is offering two more outdoor movies this summer on the large screen.

On Saturday, July 12, the feature will be "Iron Man 3." The movie starts at dusk. Prior to the film, area teens are invited to participate in games and "Iron Man" fun as part of the library's monthly "2nd Saturday" program.

At the end of the month, the library will show the original "Back to the Future" movie. The film will start at dusk. The event also marks the end of the library's adult summer reading program, so winners will be announced prior to the movie starting.

Heart Safe La Plata offering free CPR classes

Heart Safe La Plata offers "CPR Anytime," a free class to teach groups the basics of CPR. A trainer will come visit groups with a 22-minute DVD and a personal mannequin called a Mini Anne. The DVD includes information on child CPR, choking, and automated external defibrillators. The training is for youth groups, schools, parent groups, churches, workplace wellness groups, and civic groups. More than 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur in the home, Heart Safe La Plata reports. To increase survival rates, more people in the community need to learn how to perform CPR.

Participants will not receive CPR certification, which requires three to four hours of training, but they will be able to perform CPR in an emergency.
