Bayfield Little League All-Star team holding spaghetti dinner Saturday
The Pine River Youth Baseball 9-10 All Stars are raising funds to travel to next week's state Little League tournament in Grand Junction. The Bayfield team defeated All-Star teams from Ignacio, Cortez and Durango to win their district Little League tournament.
The team will hold a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Bayfield Lions Club hall on Church Street. The cost is $5 per plate or $20 per family. Beer will be available by donation. Checks can be sent to Pine River Youth Baseball, PO Box 532, Bayfield, CO 81122.

Basketball camp runs tomorrow at BHS
The Bayfield High School basketball girls are hosting their second day of a coed skills camp for basketball players in first through eighth grades. Walk-in registration is available at 8:30 on Saturday at the BHS gym. The cost is $50 for one day, and sibling discounts are available. Campers should bring a sack lunch, or they can pre-pay on Saturday for pizza. Camp ends at 4 p.m.
Final session of youth football sign-ups is tomorrow
The final sign-up session for Bayfield's Young American Football League is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 19 at BHS at the entrance to Wolverine Country Stadium. Pads will be handed out July 28, and practice starts July 30. All players must have a signed physical before they can start practice.
The Bayfield High School football camp for players in second through eighth grade is July 22-24. This is not mandatory for YAFL play, but is good preparation for the upcoming season. Camp forms will be available at the YAFL sign-up.
Historian to talk about railroads in Southwest Colorado
Railroad buffs who want to learn more about the old lines in southwest Colorado should plan on attending a history talk at 6 p.m., Saturday at the Navajo State Park Visitors' Center.
Local historian John Porco will talk about the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and the line that ran through what is now Navajo Reservoir and Arboles, Tiffany and Allison. The highlight of the evening will be rare and unusual photos, both of the railroad in its heyday and of its current historic remnants. Vestiges of this empire are scattered throughout Navajo State Park. The program is free, but every vehicle entering the park must have a pass. The daily entry fee is $7, and an annual pass costs $70.Â
Chuck Wagon Cook-off set for July 26
Tickets are available for the Chuck Wagon Cook-off, sponsored by the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's Association, at Valley Feeds in Gem Village and Basin Co-op in Durango. The cook-off will be held on Saturday, July 26 under the big trees at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Serving will begin at 5 p.m. but you might want to come early and decide which wagon you want to eat at. There are six wagons competing for the prize money and buckles. Competing this year will be Dr. Harry Baxstrom of Bayfield, Davin Montoya of Hesperus, Rodney Carriker, Bud Winbourn from Cortez, Monte Deckerd of Golden, and new this year will be Sam Howell from Odessa, Texas. On Saturday the grounds will be open to give the public an opportunity to visit with the cooks and look at the authentic 1800s wagons. During the day "camp coffee" will be available.
Each wagon will be serving meat, potatoes, beans, fresh bread, and a dessert. A drink will also be provided. The price of the ticket is $20. For more information call 247-2816
