Parents of newborns group starting
The Bayfield Family Center and Pine River Shares are starting a new group for parents of newborns. The first meeting is Monday, Feb. 2, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Family Center ground floor office in the Aspenwood building, Bayfield Center and Mountain View Drives in Bayfield. Forum set for proposed new fees in Bayfield
The Town of Bayfield will hold a community forum on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. to discuss an assortment of proposed new or increased fees on residents and businesses to help pay for street maintenance and storm water drainage infrastructure. The meeting will be in the town hall meeting room. For information call 884-9544.

La Plata County Commissioner Julie Westendorff will be in Bayfield from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Pine River Public Library. Any county residents with ideas or concerns is welcome to attend.

Forest Lakes pot luck, games set for Feb. 7
Pine River Shares/ Forest Lakes will hold a chili potluck and game night on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Forest Lakes Rec Center. For information, call the Bayfield Family Center at 884-4747.
Red Ball fundraiser is Feb. 7 at DMR
The annual Rotary Red Ball Express fundraiser will happen at 4 p.m. Feb. 7 on the Durango Mountain Resort bunny hill. The event is a primary fundraiser for the four Rotary clubs in La Plata County, including the Pine River Centennial Rotary Club, and for several non-profit organizations including the BEEP pre-school in Bayfield.
Club members and BEEP supporters are selling ball adoption tickets for a chance to win $5,000, $2,000, or $1,000. Rotary tickets also will be available on event day at DMR's main entry and the Red Ball staging area at the bottom of the bunny hill. Numbered big red exercise balls will roll down the hill into a chute. Through a computer program, each entry is assigned a combination of two ball numbers. Need not be present to win.
The participating Rotary clubs use proceeds for their community service projects. The Pine River club meets on Wednesdays at noon at Tequila's in downtown Bayfield.
Beef symposium set for Feb. 18
Extension agents from Colorado State University and New Mexico State University will present the latest information in the beef industry at the 32nd annual San Juan Basin Beef Cattle Symposium.
The symposium is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds extension building. Cost is $20 per person including lunch, or $25 after Feb. 3.

Library hosting drawing class
Ignacio Community Library will host a free class, drawing from photographs, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27. Participants will learn how to photograph subjects, exploring composition, lighting and expressions in human and animal subjects. They can then use the photos to draw their subjects. "Love, Your Library" party coming Feb. 8
The Pine River Library is spreading love in February with a special "Love, Your Library" celebration.
"We want to thank our friends, volunteers, community leaders, and patrons for all they do for us," says Library Director Shelley Walchak, "and this event will give us that opportunity."
The party is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8.
The event features live music from Bayfield Middle School and Bayfield High School students. There will also be free food, Valentine-making, a photo booth, and other activities for all ages.
Walchak says the event will also launch the "Love Your Library" giving campaign. Community members will be given the chance to be recognized for giving opportunities that support the library's new media room, our outdoor paving project and other worthy library projects.

Cardiologist to discuss heart health
In recognition of American Heart Month, Mercy Regional Medical Center invites the public to join interventional cardiologist and vascular specialist Dr. Alexander Fraley, M.D., for "Love Your Life, Live Longer," a free community presentation on heart health. The presentation will take place from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Durango Public Library. Fraley will explain how a healthy heart can add years to one's life, and discuss ways to optimize heart health, reduce health risks, and enhance quality of life.
