Vandalism, theft reported at movie theater parking lot

Police do not have suspects

Three cars were broken into Monday night in the parking lot at Durango Stadium 9 Movie Theatre.

Durango Police Department Cmdr. Ray Shupe said the vehicles had their windows broken sometime between 7 and 10 p.m. The suspects then rummaged through the vehicles, taking cash, checkbooks, electronic equipment, among other miscellaneous items.

About $500 worth of items were stolen, Shupe said. The damage to the cars were estimated at $1,000 a window for a total of $3,000.

Shupe said there were no suspects as of Tuesday. Stadium 9 does not have video surveillance cameras outside the building.

“We always recommend that to businesses – surveillance video oftentimes helps us solve crimes,” he said. “But it can be a cost issue for the business. Some of those systems are not cheap.”

Shupe said there was no connection to the three vehicles. All were owned by different people. Two of the vehicles were parked next to each other, and the third was parked a distance away.

Durango police have responded to Stadium 9 for break-ins in the past, but there have been no other recent incidents other than Monday’s break-in, he said.
