I was surprised by the story concerning the defacement of the cave on Comb Ridge (Herald, Nov. 30). It appears the students will walk away with little or no repercussions, except a scheduled clean up.
Classes end soon, and the students will be scattered and gone. I would not expect much of a follow up after that.
I would suggest that the students be given an incomplete for the class until they have completed a Bureau of Land Management-approved cleanup project. The mentors should be terminated from their positions, period.
Maybe the BLM with its $250,000 fine and five years in jail will take it more seriously and provide some accountability. The only lesson I see them learning right now is how to get away with it.
