Varsity hockey goes 4-0 in New Mexico

Youth teams compete in Gunnison, Grand Junction

It was a busy weekend for Durango’s varsity hockey team, which played four games New Mexico. The Demons, however, were up to the challenge and won all four, outscoring their opponents 29-9. Durango beat the Albuquerque Bears twice, 6-1 and 5-3, and they beat the New Mexico Cougars twice, 11-2 and 7-3.

Henry Howe scored 10 goals to lead the Demons in scoring. Zak Wentworth added eight goals, and Bode Ensign scored four for the Demons. Luk Petranek, Madeline Glotfelty, Nicholas Best, Eli Holden, Zealand Eaton and Mitch Rhodus also scored goals for the Demons. Goalie Evan Brock made 61 saves.

The Demons now will have a short break for the holidays before returning Jan. 7-9 for the Mid-Season All Star Showcase in Los Alamos, New Mexico. They will compete against Rio Grande High School Hockey League foes in the showcase, which includes teams from Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.

Durango’s 14U team was in Gunnison for a showcase weekend. The team played a back-and-forth game with Steamboat Springs A, but Steamboat scored in the final minute to win the game, 4-3. Gavin Zuber scored twice, and Wynn Daniels scored once with an assist from Brenden Johnson. Bryson Quimby made 26 saves.

The 14U team also lost 3-1 to Summit A. Luke Fowler scored a short-handed goal while Quimby made 19 saves. The team’s final game ended in a 2-2 tie against Gunnison A. Johnson and Fowler each scored with assists credited to Fowler, Zuber and Daniels. Quimby recorded 23 saves in the tie.

The 12U-B team hosted Grand Junction and went 3-0-1, outscoring GJ 26-13. Milo Martin and Ben Blanchard both had hat tricks, and Ruben Mullen, Colton Green, Jody Holden, Shea Morrissey, Keelyn Reynolds, and Brady LaBossiere also contributed goals Donnie Rome, Landon Quimby, Morrissey, Mullen, Gideon Bokelman, and LaBossiere were credited with assists. Quimby and Jack Womack shared goalie duties.

The 10U-B team split the weekend series with Grand Junction, 2-2. Walker Green, Jacoby Thompson, Peter Strength, Steven Blevins, Brock Waddell and Jasia Griego all scored goals, assisted by Griego, Henri Devitre and Agatha Dos Santos. Strength, Kellen Hernandez and Austin O'Dwyer shared goalie duties.
