Vaulting toward SJBL supremacy

No other San Juan Basin League team competes in the pole vault, so Ignacio is hosting that portion of the league meet separately.

The Bobcats will compete by themselves at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield before heading to Grand Junction for the rest of the league meet.

“It’s just three Ignacio athletes in full competition,” Ignacio High School track and field head coach Tony Kimball said.

The Bobcats could travel to Grand Junction a day early to have their athletes compete at the site of the league meet, but that would involve an extra night – and the extra cost – in the hotel.

“It’s nice to not have to go up a day early,” Kimball said. “We just can’t afford it.”

All three of the Ignacio athletes currently are ranked in the top 18 in Class 2A and currently are qualified for the state track and field meet.

“We’re hoping to better our position and make sure we don’t get bumped,” Kimball said.
