Veggie chips are gluten-free treat

As more and more people are diagnosed with celiac disease and find themselves intolerant to wheat, where can they turn for well … a snack?

Potato chips, of course, have no wheat, barley or rye (the three grains that comprise gluten) and thank God for small favors, are generally safe. But check the label first, because chip makers have been known to sneak in flavor enhancers that contain gluten.

But one of the hottest sellers for new gluten-free products at Natural Grocers, a downtown health food store, is – drum roll please – a vegetable chip.

Called Wild Mountain Veggie Crackers, they’re made in Colorado from dried vegetables, nuts and seeds. Besides being free of gluten, they also don’t include dairy or eggs, other ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction. And for a little bonus, they’re lower in carbohydrates than most snacks.

“When people are switching to a gluten-free or Paleo diet, they’re looking to switch to a lower-carb lifestyle,” said Tiffany Godwin.

Even if you’re not, it’s always good to know where you can find a snack.
