A white pickup truck has become stranded on the Colorado Trail just outside Durango, in a location accessible only by foot, bike or horseback.
The vehicle sits several hundred feet down the single-track trail, just below the upper Junction Creek trailhead, several miles northwest of town. With no road access, hikers were puzzled over how it got there.
“It’s the most bizarre thing you’ve ever seen in your life,” said Byron Turner, a longtime resident of the area.
Authorities say the vehicle’s improbable parking job is the result of impaired driving.
Colorado State Patrol said a drunken driver left the Junction Creek Campground at 8:13 a.m. Aug. 8, drove off the road and rolled down an embankment onto the trail. The driver, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Because of the truck’s location, removing it is expected to be difficult. CSP is working with the U.S. Forest Service to coordinate the removal.
“Basically, it’s a whole mess,” a CSP spokesman said.
