The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary has opened its annual Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest, which gives local students in grades nine to 12 the opportunity to receive $21,000 in national scholarship funding.
During the 2017-18 school year, applicants are required to submit, with a teacher’s signature, an original piece of artwork on paper or canvas from mediums, including water color, pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon, acrylic, pen-and-ink or oil. Digital art and photography do not qualify.
The first-place winner from each local auxiliary advances to a district competition, and district winners advance to a state competition. State winners compete for a share of $21,000 in national awards, and a national first place winner is awarded a $10,000 scholarship and featured in VFW Auxiliary Magazine and on the VFW Auxiliary website.
Applications must be submitted to the Durango VFW, 1550 Main Ave., by the March 31 deadline.
