The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office on Friday identified a woman who was killed earlier this week and arrested a man suspected of killing her.
The death was reported about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of Canyon Circle, at a home in the Vista subdivision near the western town limits of Pagosa Springs.
Deputies arrived to find a woman who suffered “multiple stab wounds to the neck and back,” according to a news release issued Friday by the Sheriff’s Office.
The woman was identified as Millie Mestas, 47, of Archuleta County.
After several interviews, the Sheriff’s Office arrested Christopher Ross Maez, 52, of Archuleta County.
Maez is being held on $1 million bail on suspicion of first-degree murder, felony assault and domestic violence.
Maez also had outstanding warrants for failure to appear and violation of bail conditions in Archuleta County, and failure to appear in Montezuma County.
No further information, including a possible motive, were included in Friday’s news release.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation, including assisting with interviews and the collection and preservation of evidence located at the scene.
