Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a lecture by Judith Reynolds, “The Renaissance Palace on Main Avenue: Durango’s Victorian Architecture,” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the center’s Lyceum Room 120.
This event is free and open to the public.
The Newman Building, built in 1892 at corner of Eighth Street and Main Avenue, is a prime example of a reimagined Roman fortress. Durango’s building boom in the early 1890s made America’s fascination for world architecture dramatically visible.
Reynolds is an arts journalist, art historian and political cartoonist. After a career in academia, she switched to the for-profit world of newspaper journalism. In 1994, Reynolds and her late husband, David, moved to Durango, where she began freelancing for The Durango Herald and teaching occasionally at FLC.
