Video shows gas station robbery

Police release surveillance to get help to ID suspect

The Durango Police Department released surveillance footage Friday of an ExxonMobil service station being robbed New Year’s Eve.

The man, who took an undisclosed amount of cash from the store at 25th Street and Main Avenue around 8 p.m., was at large as of Friday afternoon.

The video shows a man wearing a hooded coat with a scarf covering his face. He spends several minutes inside the store before bringing several items such as soda and candy to the checkout stand. The clerk is seen ringing up the items and putting them in plastic bags.

He asks the woman for some lottery tickets.

He points to the cash register and asks the attendant to open the register and put the money in the same shopping bag as his other items.

He then asks the clerk to come out from behind the counter and go into a back room. The woman spends a couple of minutes in the back room before emerging to call authorities.

The suspect, described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, never displayed a weapon. He left on foot in an unknown direction.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigator Joe Farmer at 375-4730 or Crime Stoppers at 247-1112.

“We’re looking for leads from the public,” said Lt. Ray Shupe, spokesman for Durango Police Department. “We don’t have anything right now.”
