Vigil shoots Fort Lewis women’s golf into 11th

FLC freshman takes 14th overall

Backing up a round of 7-over-par 79, Fort Lewis College freshman golfer Summer Vigil shot an 81 to finish in a tie for 14th overall at the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament of the season.

Vigil’s two-day total of 160 put her 20 strokes behind individual winner Jennifer Hankins of Metro State. The tournament was played at Murphy Creek Golf Club in Aurora.

As a team, Vigil led the Skyhawks to an 11th-place finish ahead of RMAC foes Adams State, Chadron State and Black Hills State. California State-Monterey Bay won the tournament with a combined score of 43-over 619. Regis, which hosted the tournament, finished in a tie for second along with Metro State only seven strokes back. Fort Lewis shot 709 as a team.

Isabella Martinez was the second-best FLC golfer with a two-day total of 174. That put her in a tie for 43rd. Shelby Hindes (187) took 60th, Michelle Roth (189) placed 62nd, and Lindsey Blythe (193) finished 66th. There were 75 players in the field.

Hankins dominated the competition as the only player under par. Emma Lundvall of CSU-Monterey Bay and Elise Filuk of Regis tied for second at 7-over.

The FLC women will be back in action again next week at the Western New Mexico University Intercollegiate Tournament in Goodyear, Arizona.
