As the fire rages on, so does the debate about tourists and tourism, i.e., do we need/want them or not?
I say it depends.
Today, while on the river trail by the recreation center, I noticed trash cans OVERFLOWING with discarded lunch bags; as it turns out, hundreds of them. It also turns out these were lunches for a number of multi-state church groups composed of almost 200 children. Upon closer examination, many or most of these contained discarded bags that should have been recycled; discarded soda cans that should have been recycled; discarded plastic water bottles that should have been recycled; and possibly worst of all, probably about a hundred untouched/uneaten pieces of fruit, just thrown in the trash. Those could have been donated instead. I spent over an hour trying to sort these things out. This was my civic duty, and I deserve no attaboys whatsoever.
SO if you’re coming here as a tourist, PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE. Treat OUR town the way you’d want us to treat yours. If you are coming here to be noisy, inconsiderate or to abuse nature or tear things up, in my opinion, please don’t even come here at all. We have enough on our plates right now.
