Volleyball Roundup: Durango bounces back; Bayfield sees Centauri win league title

Centauri takes league title from Bayfield

Durango High School’s volleyball team bounced back from Friday nights three set loss to Fruita Monument with a 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-7 victory against Grand Junction Saturday afternoon in Grand Junction.

In the Friday night loss, the Demons (11-4, 5-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) hurt themselves badly with unforced errors, but on Saturday DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said the team got back to playing aggressive and fast to take care of the Tigers (5-10, 1-5 SWL).

Durango junior Taylor Wolf dominated at the net and had six blocks to go with six kills and three aces.

Seniors Ally Snow and Brett Rowland led the Demons in kills with eight apiece.

Brianna Brown had 19 assists in the win.

As a team, Durango recorded 12 blocks and 12 aces.

The Demons will play at Montezuma-Cortez (6-11) in a non-league match for their final road game of the season on Tuesday before returning home to host Fruita Monument (15-1, 6-0 SWL) on Friday.

Bayfield High School

The Bayfield Wolverines will not repeat as volleyball champions of the 3A Intermountain League. Centauri defeated Bayfield in four sets (21-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-22) in a hard-fought game Saturday in Cortez. The Falcons are now 17-0 this season and went 10-0 in league play to clinch the IML title.

After beating Montezuma-Cortez 3-0, the Wolverines are now 11-6 overall and 7-2 in league play with one league match to play at 6 p.m. Thursday at Pagosa Springs.

BHS will finish the regular season Oct. 4 at Durango and then will wait to find out which region it will play in to open the postseason.

Ignacio High School

The Ignacio High School volleyball team picked up a pair of win in 2A/1A San Juan Basin League play with wins against Norwood (3-13, 1-10 SJBL) and Telluride (13-4, 8-3 SJBL) on Saturday.

The Bobcats (7-9, 6-5 SJBL) knocked off Norwood 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 25-15 in the morning, then came back from a 2-1 deficit to top Telluride 17-25, 25-16, 13-25, 25-17, 15-8.
