Volleyball Roundup: Durango finishes 2-2 at Queen of the Mountain tournament

Ignacio sweeps Nucla, Bayfield dropped by Centauri

The Durango High School volleyball team bounced back Saturday at the Queen of the Mountain tournament at Battle Mountain High School, and won both matches in convincing fashion.

The Demons (9-4, 2-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) defeated Vail Mountain and Vail Christian in straight sets. In the first game against the Gore Rangers (8-7, 7-2 2A/1A Western Slope), DHS won 25-22, 25-16 and 25-20. In the second game against the Saints 5-5, 4-3 2A/1A WSL), the Demons won convincingly, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-14.

In Game 1, DHS was led by Kyle Rowland, who recorded 10 kills, while Paige Ammerman had eight. Leah Wesley and Ammerman recorded three service aces each in the win, while Emmy Romero had a team-high 13 assists. Rowland had a big defensive game as well, as she recorded 19 digs.

In the second game, it was Sydney Summers who led DHS in kills with eight, while Ammerman hammered home seven. Romero had 10 assists, while Wesley led the Demons in digs with 12.

“(I’m) proud of the team for playing hard today and winning both (matches) in three sets,” said DHS head coach Colleen Vogt.

The Demons will travel to Grand Junction for a clash against the Warriors (3-10, 0-4 SWL) at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Bayfield High School

The Bayfield High School volleyball team was beaten by Centauri (7-5, 4-1 3A Intermountain League) Saturday afternoon at Centauri High School, as the Wolverines fell in four sets, 25-22, 22-25, 18-25 and 22-25.

The Wolverines (9-4, 4-2 3A IML) committed an unusual amount of attack errors in the loss with 24. Meghan Youngblood paced the Wolverines with a double-double, as she recorded 33 assists and 11 digs. Mavis Edwards also had a double-double with 15 kills, 14 digs and seven assists. Annie Fusco added 11 kills in the loss.

BHS recorded a season-high seven team blocks.

The Wolverines will host Pagosa Springs (4-8, 1-3 IML) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Ignacio High School

The Ignacio High School volleyball team swept Nucla (1-11, 0-5 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) in straight sets Saturday at IHS, as the Bobcats won 25-13, 25-16 and 25-12.

Ignacio (7-6, 3-4 2A/1A SJBL) took control of the match early on through its service game, and did not let up.

Charlize Valdez paced IHS with five service aces, while freshman Grace Gonzales added four. Gonzales led the Bobcats with eight kills, while Lexy Young added seven in the win. Ebonee Gomez and Marisa Carmenoros tied a team-high nine digs, while Valdez had seven.

“The entire team’s service game was amazing,” said IHS head coach Thad Cano. “We served both short and deep serves, and really got (Nucla) out of system. The girls were on fire today in a full team effort, and I’m just beaming with how they translated what they learned in practice to today’s game.”

The Bobcats will host Mancos (4-7, 3-3 SJBL) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
