Four Corners Volleyball Club will host its 2016 Diggin It In Durango volleyball tournament Saturday and Sunday. The tournament features 93 teams from 24 different volleyball clubs located from throughout the four corners region and will be held at various locations in Bayfield, Ignacio and Durango. Championship matches will be held Sunday in Whalen Gymnaisum at Fort Lewis College.
"Our tournament was created to bring together the teams from Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico who don't normally play each other," said Terene Foutz, the director of the Four Corner Volleyball Club and Diggin It In Durango. "It's a really fun two days for the clubs, their coaches and all the families. The other clubs tell me that they like to use this tournament as a weekend vacation to start spring, combined with really competitive volleyball."
The tournament will feature two rounds of pool play, then a single elimination tournament bracket with a gold, silver and bronze division based upon pool play results. The first round and second round will feature four-team pools with matches of two sets to 25.
The single-elimination round will begin Sunday at 12:30. The final round will feature a two out of three set match to 25. The championship matches are slated for 4:30 p.m. at Whalen Gymnasium.
"This is our biggest tournament we've ever done this year and should be our most competitive," Foutz said.
Smack Sportswear, a California volleyball clothing company, is the sponsor of the tournament.
Entry is $5 daily for adults or $10 for the tournament, $4 and $8 for youth and teens, and entry is free for children six and under.
