Volunteers needed Friday for milkweed planting

Trails 2000 along with Durango Nature Studies, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Alpine Bank need volunteers to help plant milkweed at the Hermosa rail yard from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday. The the rail yard can be accessed by taking U.S. Highway 550 one mile north of Hermosa and turning right into the rail yard’s gravel parking lot.

Milkweed plants are the only food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars, and the event will help combat the declining milkweed in North America.

All ages are welcome, and tools and instructions will be provided.

Registration is available online at bit.ly/2y7o0sL.
