The recent Herald article, “Bipartisanship takes center stage; Incumbent looks to fend off Independent challenger” (Oct. 7), regarding the Colorado House District 59 contest, requires additional context for readers.
Independent Paul Jones is challenging incumbent Democrat Barbara McLachlan in the race to truly represent Southwest Colorado at the Statehouse. The Herald reports: “In an era of hyper partisanship, state Sen. Barbara McLachlan touts her record working with Republican lawmakers.” However, the facts don’t align with this narrative.
McLachlan has voted with her party 98 percent of the time in her two years at the Legislature. In addition, she voted with her special interest campaign funders (a practice which I, and I’m sure many readers are as well, am vehemently opposed to) to oppose the major bipartisan legislative achievement of 2018 – saving and reforming the state pension plan. She does not have a record of bipartisanship, not even close.
I’m supporting independent Paul Jones because it is time for a representative who puts the people of his district before party. Paul Jones will represent us, the people of House District 59, regardless of party affiliation. Barbara McLachlan will not.
I invite you to join me in voting for Paul Jones for House District 59.
