Vote for libraries and for Clyde Church

Two years ago, the La Plata county commissioners cut to zero the funding for our branch libraries (Sunnyside and Fort Lewis Mesa). This was done without consultation with those communities. Since then, the two branch libraries have been supported by the 9-R school district, but the adult services, extra hours, etc. will end this year, isolating our citizens in the south of the county even more than their geography.

These libraries serve as safe places after school for students, provide the only access to internet for some families, and serve as community centers.

Over the years, the branches have been assisted financially by Friends of the Library by providing funds for summer programming, furniture and collections.

Last summer, Fort Lewis Mesa reading programs served 488 students and families and 88 students enrolled in the summer reading program. Except for one week of vacation bible school, the library provides the only summer activities. This outreach is in the best tradition of libraries and the use of the 9-R facilities makes for an excellent partnership. It was heroic when 9-R was able to assist as the budget cuts were unexpected by those communities.

I will be voting for Clyde Church for La Plata County Commission, who has a strong record of supporting literacy and an approachable manner. His work as a Rotarian means he understands community service. Because he does not run another business, he can also be completely dedicated to serving the people of La Plata County.
