La Plate Electric Association’s mission as a member-owned co-op is to serve our community, instead of optimizing shareholders’ profits. Therefore, it is important to vote for candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to serve our community.
Ted Compton in District 3 and Tim Wheeler in District 4 both exemplify that concept of giving back to La Plata County. Compton has served on the FastTrack Communications board, an LPEA start-up, and the La Plata Open Space Conservancy for many years. Wheeler has aided locally owned businesses by serving on the Local First board for 15 years, benefiting our local economy. His knowledge of LPEA as an incumbent director understanding the issues is invaluable.
We need board directors like Compton and Wheeler who are willing to challenge Tri-State for the greater benefit of our community. Tri-State is out to maximize its profits, which is the reason LPEA has 30 years left on an unreasonably long 50-year contract requiring us to purchase 95% of its mostly coal-generated power. By gaining partial or complete independence from Tri-State, we would be able to generate our own renewable energy and purchase electricity on the free market, both much less expensive than what we are being charged by Tri-State.
Please vote for Ted Compton and Tim Wheeler, who are committed to stand up for our member-owned co-op.
