Vote for the person, not the party

I could have written Janalee Hogan’s letter (Feb. 11) with only one substitution – I was a registered Democrat for 56 years. Both parties have disappointed me also – the extremes that we see in the political realm have fractured our society.

My decision to become an unaffiliated voter became a reality this year when Don Coram announced his candidacy for U.S. House of Representatives. I have followed and admired Don throughout his terms in the Colorado Legislature. Don’s common-sense approach and understanding and use of compromise and collaboration have allowed him to advance the issues of the Western Slope.

While I feel it is important to replace our current “representative” who exemplifies the extremes that have fractured our society – I also feel it is time to vote for the person – not the party. As Janalee says – candidates who reflect the moderate citizen – can come from either party.

The choice to join the largest voter block in Colorado is a personal one. I encourage you to take the time to examine your own experience and then choose what reflects your values. Unaffiliated does not mean uninvolved, and this is another year when your vote counts. The website is: www.coloradosos.gov/voter/pages/pub/olvr/findVoterReg.xhtml.
