Vote ‘no’ on 4A, no more blank checks

The ballot language for Issue 4A is seriously concerning. It’s not a $150 million price tag for the taxpayer, as it states repayment costs may go up to $300 million. Who pays for that? The property owners of La Plata County. It discusses building a new elementary school and maintaining existing buildings. It also mentions “investing in workforce housing solutions.” What exactly does that mean? I guess that would be up to the school board.

The most concerning wording comes after the all-important “and,” specifically: “for acquiring, construction or improving any capital assets that the district is authorized by law to own.” That is too open ended. It means exactly what it says, any thing, if it doesn’t violate law. We know the district isn’t too concerned with the law, as evidenced by their recent conflict with the state attorney over illegally using school resources to promote a political candidate, who just happens to sit on the school board.

I guess they expect us to blindly trust them with hundreds of millions of our dollars and debt. The same school board who masked our children, segregated them and locked down schools for months, while fully knowing that none of it would protect our children during COVID-19. The same district that received over $9,000,000 in federal funds between 2022 and 2024 for COVID-19 expenses (cosfp.org). So, are we to trust these people who are willing to sell our children’s education and mental health for money? That’s a hard no.
