Vote the bums out over water rate hike

Water and sewer rates are up – kudos to our wonderful city Council!

The 3 percent increase in the water and sewer rates is sinful.

Council needs to listen to the citizens. It needs to manage its expenditures to the revenues.

Eliminate some of the redundantand hoity-toity services and departments provided. We are not Aspen, Telluride or San Francisc. We are Durango!

We represent the culture of the old West, independent and self-sufficient. City Council should represent us the citizens and not plot and scheme around our directives. The citizens voted overwhelmingly not to increase taxes.

What options do we have? Vote the bums out. Elect councilors that heed the voice of the people and can say no, we must manage within our means.

The claim that increases are necessary to keep up with inflation is erroneous. As the city’s population increases, and as the number of homes increase, and as the sales dollars increase, then so do the city’s tax revenues.

A 159 percent increase in water and sewer rates over 16 years is way above the rate of inflation. This equates out to an average 10 percent increase each year. When was the last time your pay increased 10 percent?
