Vote to extend half-cent sales tax

I write this letter to support the proposed extension of the 1999 ½-cent sales tax, which will be voted on this spring. The 1999 sales tax, which was passed by Durango residents, has benefited everyone in our community, both young and old, and we have to look no further than the Durango Community Recreation Center to actually see the results. The ½-cent sales tax has funded the building of the rec center and also provided the financial resources to underwrite major improvements to the Animas River Trail. The city of Durango is made of a community of engaged youth, millennials, baby boomers and oldies but goodies – and we all use and appreciate the excellent parks, trails and river access. Those amenities do not come without a significant cost to install, maintain, expand and improve over the years.

Please show your support by voting to pass the extension of the ½-cent tax to enable the city to help sustain our incredible recreational opportunities. Lastly, I applaud and appreciate those dedicated people who take great pride in stewarding these valuable assets for the benefit of the community at large.
