Chief Hal Doughty and the Durango Fire Protection District Board of Directors are asking our community for a mill levy increase to hire more staff, provide ongoing training and replace aging equipment.
No one likes taxes. In this case, however, it is justified, as public safety is vital to a thriving community.
Our rural roads, weather and volume of calls for residents and visitors present numerous challenges in the public safety arena. And training the DFPD, both paid staff and volunteers, is critical, as we must have the very best responding to our emergency needs.
Behind the scenes, the DFPD must comply with a number of state and federal regulations the general public does not fathom. I encourage a yes vote for the DFPD mill levy increase on the November ballot.
In these days of decreasing oil and gas revenues, we need to step up and make sure the department has the funds necessary to keep doing a great job.
