Interesting editorial on the county commissioner’s race in District 3 in the (Aug. 18) edition of the Herald.
The Colorado Democratic Committee has made it known that they are going all out to elect county commissioners statewide with a D after their name. This is the same party that claims that they are protecting democracy. Tell that to the voters in District 3 that runs from Vallecito to the New Mexico border on the east side of the county. In elections going back well over 30 years, the Republican candidates in District 3 have soundly trounced the Democrat candidate (including the current District 3 commissioner) within the geographical boundaries of the district. On more than one occasion, the Democrat candidate couldn’t even carry the precinct in which they lived!
From time to time, the state Legislature (with a Democrat super majority) will entertain a bill to allow district voting and the local Democrat Central Committee will head to Denver to lobby against any changes. Even though there’s a pretty even in split of Democrat, Republican and independent voters in La Plata County, the city of Durango has three Democrat commissioners. The voter’s choice in District 3 is canceled out by Durango Democrats. Could somebody explain how that’s protecting democracy?
