Waldo lands in 49th

Durango golfer gets grip on state

A new preshot routine helped Durango High School golfer Reiley Waldo get comfortable at state rather quickly.

Waldo fired a 95 to finish Day 1 of the two-day CHSAA Class 4A Girls Golf State Championships in 49th place on Monday at Broken Tee Golf Course in Englewood.

“I was just making really solid contact, making good swings at them,” Waldo said. “Kirk (Rawles) and I worked out a whole new routine – the way I addressed the ball and kind of lined up where I wanted to hit it with practice swings and everything.”

Waldo finished the day with four pars and scored fairly well with the exception of the par-five ninth hole, her final hole of the day after starting on No. 10. She carded an 11 on that hole.

But other than that hiccup, it was a pretty solid day for Durango’s lone state representative.

“Just a couple more accurate swings and just getting through that all the way,” Waldo said of the quick fixes she’d like to make before the final round.

Rawles, Durango’s head coach, said he was very pleased with the way Waldo hit the ball from tee to green all through her morning and afternoon.

“It’s probably the best I’ve ever seen her hit the ball, all around,” Rawles said.

“I don’t think 95 is really indicative of how she played.”

The slow greens were a bit tricky for Waldo, Rawles said. But, heading into the final round, Waldo wasn’t too bothered by the state of the greens.

“They were pretty slow. Not a lot of break in them at all. They were OK,” she said.

Valor Christian’s Tori Glenn fired a 2-over 74 to take a one-shot lead into today’s final round. She’s one shot ahead of Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy and Taylor Dorans of Broomfield and two shots clear of Montrose’s Kala Keltz.

Dolores golfer Kiselya Plewe is five shots off the lead after firing a 79.

Waldo will tee off at 8:48 a.m. today on the 10th hole. She’ll be paired with Alli Smith of Estes Park and Kat Jarman of Dolores Huerta for the final round.
