Walmart, Park Elementary and social gathering report COVID-19 outbreaks

State releases updates each week
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment released new outbreak data on Wednesday, which shows several new outbreaks of COVID-19 cases in La Plata County.

New COVID-19 outbreaks at Walmart, Park Elementary School and a social gathering that led to seven people catching the virus are atop La Plata County’s outbreak update, according to state data.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment releases outbreak updates every Wednesday. An outbreak is defined as two or more cases in a 14-day period.

New outbreaks include:

Park Elementary, where an outbreak was confirmed Tuesday after two staff members and two students tested positive. Durango School District 9-R spokeswoman Julie Popp said the school is not closed, but two cohorts are in quarantine.A social gathering in La Plata County that resulted in seven people catching the virus. The outbreak was confirmed Feb. 3. CDPHE does not release additional information to protect privacy.Walmart, where an outbreak was confirmed Monday after two staff members tested positive. Walmart reported a previous COVID-19 outbreak in December that resulted in six staff members contracting the virus.A Durango youth sports team, where an outbreak was confirmed Monday after five members tested positive. The state report does not offer any additional information about what sports team.Guardian Angel Home Health Care, where an outbreak was confirmed Feb. 1 after two staff members tested positive. San Juan Basin Public Health said the staff members do not interact with members of the public or customers.Two nursing home are still reporting outbreaks in La Plata County.

Cottonwood Rehab and Extended Care had four residents and four staff members test positive. One resident has died. Sunshine Gardens Country Home had 13 residents and eight staff members test positive. Three residents have died.Previously reported, but still active outbreaks include:

Bayfield High School, Purple Cliffs homeless camp and St. Columba School.
