It didn’t take long for the Durango High School boys golf team to break through its first plateau.
The Demons tied for first place with a season-low 222 that matched Basalt on Thursday at Cobble Creek Golf Club in Montrose.
Both teams entered a playoff for the tournament title, and Basalt claimed the victory with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
Still, DHS head coach Kirk Rawles was proud of the way his team improved from Wednesday’s fourth-place finish.
“Cobble creek is a pretty technical course, and they managed their games much better (Thursday),” he said.
Bo Ward led the Demons with a season-low 72, good enough for even par and second in the tournament.
He fired a 31 on the front nine and finished with five birdies and an eagle during the round.
“I knew he had that breakthrough round in him,” Rawles said.
Cory Gillespie came in third place with a 73.
Trevor Bogus shot a season-low 77, while Cameron Barnhardt’s 80 and Cy Spicer’s 84 rounded out the Demons’ varsity scores.
“They finally proved to themselves they can match up with anybody,” coach Rawles said.
Eric Walker shot a 79, Garrett Mulkey an 83 and Daniel McElwain an 87 for the Demons’ junior varsity.
Tristan Rohrbaugh of Basalt was the medalist with a 69.
DHS will play its next tournament Sept. 3 at the Black Canyon Golf Club in Montrose.
