In an odd sense of a return to normalcy, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad could be heard chugging through town and blowing its whistle Thursday and Friday in Durango, but that doesn’t mean locomotives are taking people on rides.
The D&SNG remains closed until at least May 1 as businesses throughout Southwest Colorado shut down operations to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Jeff Johnson, general manager of the D&SNG, said the vast majority of the railroad employees are furloughed, and a small management staff is working limited hours to perform necessary maintenance and upkeep.
“In the midst of this effort, Durango residents may, from time to time, notice a D&SNG locomotive moving rolling stock, especially work and freight cars, as we seek to keep our assets intact through this period,” he said.
Johnson said the railroad’s official reopening will depend on the situation with the coronavirus.
“With our entire community, we look forward to the day when we open our doors again, do our part to serve our visitors and the city of Durango, and help rebuild a struggling economy,” he said.
