Water, land use to be discussed on Oct. 23

The connection between water supply and land use planning will be explored from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 at the La Plata County Administration Building, 1101 E. 2nd Ave. in Durango.

The session is aimed at land use planners, water utility representatives, local government officials, and anyone else who is interested. It is sponsored by the American Planners Association Colorado chapter, La Plata County, and the Durango-based Water Information Program.

The meeting will look at how pressures of reduced water supplies intersect with increased population and the need for adequate housing. Topics include: American West and Colorado water realities and issues, water and land use planning overview, Colorado land use regulations, and land use planning tools and techniques.

The session is being taught by industry experts Drew Beckwith and Barbara Green. Beckwith is the Water Policy Manager for Western Resource Advocates, and Green is a founding partner in the law firm Sullivan, Green & Seavy, LLC.

Beckwith works with water providers, state and local governments, and partner organizations on water efficiency in land use planning. Green represents clients in matters involving water and land use planning and development and has prepared numerous land use regulations for local governments, including the Model Land Use Code for Colorado's small to medium sized counties.
