A major water main in the town of Ignacio was damaged late Wednesday night between Ute Street and West Aly, impacting multiple blocks.

The damage affected properties from Pioneer Street to Navajo Street, as well as properties from Ute Street to Browning Avenue. The water main also covers portions of county roads 320, 320A and 320B. About four total blocks were affected.

Town Clerk Tuggy Dunton said she is unsure of how large the water line break was but estimated it would have to be a decent size in order to impact a large portion of the town.

“There are still residents without water,” she said. “We are working as hard and fast as we can to get the main repaired and water service repaired.”

As of 9 a.m. Thursday, the leak had been contained and Ignacio public works department crews were working on repairs. As a precautionary measure, the town is encouraging residents to boil water before drinking it or to drink bottled water.

As of 11 a.m., Dunton was unable to say what caused the break, but she said the town will alert residents as more information is released. There was no set time frame for when the issue will be resolved as of Thursday morning.

“The boil advisory will remain in affect until we get the test results for the water back,” Dunton said, adding she’s unsure how long water testing will take.
