We hear it all the time: Durango is so “dog-friendly!” Yet, you can’t rent a place in this town if you own a dog unless you’re willing to shell out a few hundred extra dollars each month.
You can’t bring your dog nearly anywhere in this town unless you’re willing to tie her up outside (thank you to the businesses that do allow pups, though!).
Most notably, we only have one dog park!
Sure, we have a ton of amazing open space. But don’t let your dogs off-leash – otherwise, Animal Control will be there in five minutes to give you a $75 ticket. Even if Animal Control doesn’t come, there’s probably someone on the trail with you ready to complain about your lack of leash.
Sure doesn’t seem that “dog-friendly” these days.
Durango really could use more dog parks. One great space I have in mind would be Fanto Park next to Park Elementary School. Since this is a multi-use park, perhaps there could be designated off-leash dog hours. This way, if there is someone who truly doesn’t love dogs, they could still enjoy the park without needing to worry.
If you agree, check out this petition to create off-leash dog hours at Fanto Park: www.ipetitions.com/petition/fanto-park
