‘We have each other’s back all over the field’

Rebecca Miller scored a career-high four goals and Sara McMahon had a hat trick Tuesday afternoon to lead the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team to its fourth consecutive victory, 13-4 over Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“The awesome thing about this team is that each person can step up when we need them to,” head coach Julia Decker said. “We were able to take care of the ball and finish on cage today, two things that have been a main focus of ours lately. I am proud that we are able to make adjustments when needed and that we have each other’s back all over the field. This was a great team win for us.”

The Skyhawks (5-1) scored the first seven goals of the game. Just 30 seconds in, Miller found the back of the net twice for a 2-0 lead. Taylor Cabrera and McMahon (with a Jam Vertner assist) added a goal apiece before Miller (Brooke Galle assist) recorded her first career hat trick just 12 minutes into the game.

At 17:07, McMahon (Vertner assist) scored her second goal, and Lauren Appenzeller added the Skyhawks’ seventh goal of the half with less than nine minutes to play.

Leading 8-1 at the 8:19 mark, Carly Smoke scored her second goal of the season, followed by Galle and Miller scores to give FLC a 10-2 lead at the half.

Cabrera, McMahon and Ellie Carpenter each found the back of the net in the second half before Aquinas closed the game with back-to-back goals.

Miller tallied a game-high nine shots, followed by McMahon’s seven and Cabrera’s four. Brie Walker made five saves in the first half and Ally Guerrero had four in the second half.

Twenty of the Skyhawks’ 29 shots came in the first half and they held the hosts to 18 total shots.

Fort Lewis will wrap up its Michigan road trip at 5 p.m. Thursday at Grand Valley State.
